मुंशी प्रेमचंद का जन्म 31 जुलाई, 1880 को वाराणसी के निकट लमही गाँव में हुआ था।

नौकरी के साथ ही पढ़ाई जारी रखी 1910 में इंटर पास किया और 1919 में बी.ए. पास करने के बाद स्कूलों के डिप्टी सब-इंस्पेक्टर बन गए।

‘गोदान’ उनकी कालजयी रचना है। उन्होंने कुल 15 उपन्यास, 300 से अधिक कहानियाँ, 3 नाटक, 10 अनुवाद, 7 बाल-पुस्तकें तथा हजारों पृष्ठों के लेख, संपादकीय, भाषण, भूमिका, पत्र आदि लिखे।
